Don’t Tell Me You Need Me

Don’t Tell Me You Need Me

Don’t tell me you need me;

need is a cage

where you take my blood and oxygen

and leave me to suffocate.

Don’t tell me you need me;

need is a code word

for being required to fulfil your desires

whilst mine will go unheard.

Don’t tell me you need me;

you do not lay claim

to any part that forms my self

and alone I shall remain.

Don’t tell me you need me;

for I will become poverty

and leave you with a pressing lack

of even the scraps of me.

Instead tell me you want me

to respect and love and defend,

to care about as a human being

and not means to your happy end.
