There’s A Heart

There’s A Heart

There’s a heart

sitting on a musty shelf in a second hand shop

amongst old toys and bric-a-brac.

The staff found it that September morning left outside in a crumpled donation bag.

They’ve reduced its price, this time,

because once it’s taken home and unwrapped

people keep bringing it back

Past its use by date

demand a refund

damaged goods

doesn’t do the job properly

not fit for purpose

takes too long to work

malfunctioning

needs exchanging

replacing.

Inadequate.

Collateral.

A commodity.

There’s a heart

sitting on a musty shelf in a second hand shop

waiting for its real owner.

Faintly pulsing

in a desperate attempt to be heard.

It’s forgotten its real purpose

is to beat life into veins

and love first the body it keeps alive.

But this is my heart.

It’s priceless,

there’s not another like it.

Please look past its outside appearance

it’s broken but repaired with gold

and has so much love to give.

When I find it

i’m not sure it’s going to trust me enough to come home

but my heart, I promise I’m listening.
